Can AI Find You The Best Price?

AI can help you shortlist products and spot a deal, but it often gets the lowest price wrong. Use it to narrow your options, then check the price yourself on the shop's site, a price-comparison site or Google Shopping before you buy. In a Which? snapshot in October 2026, ChatGPT named the true lowest price and retailer for only 8 of 25 products.

Works with: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Universal Cart (USA), Alexa for Shopping, and ordinary price-comparison sites.

Quick Steps

  1. Ask AI for a shortlist with your budget and country.
  2. Open the shop yourself and confirm model, tax and delivery.
  3. Compare the same model on one more site or a price history.
  4. Never pay a stranger by gift card, wire or crypto.

What Can AI Actually Do For Shopping?

Modern chatbots and shopping helpers are good at the early part of a purchase: explaining what to look for, comparing two models side by side, and suggesting a shortlist that fits your budget. They are much weaker at naming the one true lowest price right now.

OpenAI's own help page for shopping with ChatGPT Search says product results can include prices from third-party providers, that the first price you see may not be the lowest, and that merchant prices can lag behind real updates. Google's Universal Cart, launched in the USA on 15 October 2026, is built to keep items from several shops in one place and watch for price drops, but it still leaves you to confirm the final checkout price.

Black Friday 2026 falls on 27 November. That is a busy week for "best price" claims, so a careful check matters more than usual.

How Accurate Is ChatGPT On Prices?

In October 2026 the UK consumer group Which? asked ChatGPT to find the lowest price on 25 popular products, from laptops and TVs to washing machines. ChatGPT got the lowest price and the right retailer for only eight products. In 68% of cases there was at least one problem: a wrong price, a missed cheaper shop, or the wrong product.

Which? also saw ChatGPT quote an out-of-date "lowest in the past six months" figure as if it were the current price, and show a shopping box for the wrong model. OpenAI told Which? that ChatGPT Search provides links so you can check with retailers, that initial listings may not be the lowest available, and that it is working to update pricing faster.

Use ChatGPT to learn what a good kettle or hearing-aid battery looks like. Do not treat its first number as the deal of the day.

Check an AI price in 3 steps. 1 Ask for a shortlist with your budget, country and must-haves, not one magic price. 2 Open the shop yourself and confirm the model, tax, delivery and returns. 3 Compare one more place: Google Shopping, a comparison site, or Amazon price history. Checked 5 November 2026.
Three steps that catch most AI price mistakes before you buy.

How Do I Check An AI Price In 3 Steps?

  1. Ask for a shortlist, not a single "best price". Include your budget, country and must-haves. Example: "I need a quiet kettle under $40 in the USA. List three options with pros and cons, and link to each shop."
  2. Open the shop yourself. Type the address or use the link, then confirm the exact model, colour and seller. Check tax, delivery and returns. OpenAI's help page says to confirm final price, availability and return policy with the merchant before you buy.
  3. Compare one more place. Search the same model on Google Shopping, a trusted comparison site, or the manufacturer's own store. On Amazon, Alexa for Shopping can show a price history so you can see whether a "sale" is really lower than usual.

What About Google AI Mode And Universal Cart?

Google AI Mode answers longer shopping questions inside Google Search and can show products from Google's Shopping Graph. On 15 October 2026 Google launched Universal Cart in the USA across Search and the Gemini app. Google says you can save items from several retailers in one cart, get alerts when a price drops or something is back in stock, see relevant promo codes, and check out with Google Pay at participating shops, or hand the cart to the merchant's own site.

Universal Cart is USA-only for now. Google's announcement does not claim UK availability. Outside the USA, use Google Shopping or AI Mode where you have them, then finish on the retailer's site.

How Do I Ask ChatGPT Or Gemini For Shopping Help?

  • Say where you live and your currency. "I am in the UK and pay in pounds" or "I am in Texas and want prices in US dollars."
  • Name the exact product if you already know it, including model numbers. Vague names produce vague prices.
  • Ask it to show sources and several shops, not one winner: "Show three reputable retailers and the price each lists today."
  • Ask what could make the total higher: delivery, tax, extended warranty, ink, or subscription extras.

ChatGPT can also save products to Favourites in its Library and, for some clothes and accessories, offer a virtual try-on. Those features help you decide what to buy. They still do not replace a final price check.

What About Personalized Prices?

Some shops show different prices to different people, based on things like location, device or browsing history. That is a separate issue from a chatbot guessing wrong. If two people see different totals for the same item, compare on another device, in a private browser window, or after signing out. Our Trending In AI coverage of FTC personalized pricing is a useful starting point when that story develops.

What Should I Never Trust An AI Price For?

  • Medicine, glasses and hearing aids. Check with a pharmacist, optician or audiologist, and use official pharmacies.
  • Huge discounts from shops you have never heard of. Which? warns that bogus boutiques appear around the sales.
  • Investment, crypto or "guaranteed return" offers pushed by celebrity videos. Those are often deepfakes; see our scam guides.
  • Anything that needs you to pay by gift card, wire transfer or crypto. That is a classic scam pattern.

A Simple Pre-Black-Friday Habit

For anything over about $50 / £50:

  1. Ask AI what to look for and which models fit your needs.
  2. Write down the exact model name.
  3. Check today's price on at least two reputable shops.
  4. Look at a price history if one is available (Amazon Price History, or a comparison site).
  5. Only then click Buy.

That five-minute habit catches most of the mistakes Which? and OpenAI both warn about.

Common Questions

Can AI find me the absolute best price?

Not reliably. It can shortlist products and suggest where to look, but prices are often wrong or out of date. Always confirm on the retailer's site.

How often does ChatGPT get the lowest price wrong?

In Which?'s October 2026 snapshot it named the correct lowest price and retailer for only 8 of 25 products, with problems in 68% of cases.

What is Google Universal Cart?

A USA shopping cart in Google Search and Gemini, launched 15 October 2026, that can hold items from several retailers, watch for price drops and help with checkout at participating shops.

Should I use AI for Black Friday deals?

Yes for research and shortlists. No as your only price check. Confirm the model, total cost and seller yourself before you pay.

Is Alexa for Shopping better for prices?

On Amazon it can show price history, which helps you spot a fake 'deal'. It still will not replace checking other shops for a big purchase.
