What Is America.gov?
America.gov is run by the General Services Administration (GSA), a US federal agency, and was built with the White House's National Design Studio. It brings together information from more than 29,000 government websites. Instead of hunting through menus, you type or say a question, and its AI finds and explains the answer using official government sources.
- Free, with no ads.
- No account needed to ask questions.
- No app to download. It works in the web browser on your phone, tablet or computer.
- Answers come with links to the original government pages.
- You can ask in English, Spanish or French.
- You can speak your question using the microphone button.
What Can I Use America.gov For?
- Medicare and Social Security questions.
- Renewing or applying for a passport.
- Benefits, federal jobs and other common needs.
- Understanding a government letter or form: you can upload a PDF and ask what it means. The site says personal information is removed automatically, but it's still wise to cover private numbers first.
How Do I Use America.gov, Step By Step?
- Open your web browser and type america.gov into the address bar yourself. Don't click links in texts or emails.
- Check the address ends in .gov.
- Type your question in the box, or tap the microphone to say it.
- Be specific. America.gov's own example is: "I'm 67, live in Ohio, and I'm retiring in January. My husband is already on Medicare, but I'm still covered through work. What do I need to do, and when should I enroll?"
- Read the answer, then open the source links to check the official page.
- Ask a follow-up if anything is unclear, such as "Explain that more simply."
What Can't America.gov Do Yet?
For now, America.gov gives information and guidance. It doesn't file forms, apply for benefits or track applications for you. The site says that from 2027 you'll be able to complete forms, track progress and keep things in one place. News reports say a passport application service, using a Login.gov sign-in, is planned for December 2026. Tax filing with the IRS is not part of it.
Like any AI, it can make mistakes. For anything important, such as Medicare deadlines or benefit amounts, check the linked official page or call the agency.
Is America.gov Safe And Private?
- You don't need an account or personal details to ask a question.
- Leave out your Social Security number, bank details and passwords. You don't need them to get an answer.
- If you upload a letter, cover account and case numbers first.
How Do I Spot Fake America.gov Sites And Scams?
Whenever a new government service launches, scammers copy it. Watch for these warning signs:
- Wrong address. Only addresses ending in .gov belong to the US government. Watch for lookalikes that add extra words or dashes, or end in .com, .org or .us instead.
- Asking for money. America.gov is free. Nobody needs to pay to use it or to "speed up" your request.
- An "America.gov app". The site says there's no app to download. Be careful with any app claiming to be it.
- Calls, texts or emails saying "America.gov" needs your Social Security number, Medicare number or bank details. Hang up or delete.
- Gift cards, wire transfers or crypto. The government never asks for payment this way.
