Envision AI

FreeDifficulty: Easy

Last checked: 29 October 2026

What Is It, In Plain Words?

Envision AI is a free phone app that reads text out loud and describes what your camera can see. It's made for people who are blind or have low vision by Envision Technologies, together with the blind and low-vision community.

Point your phone at a letter, a food label or a handwritten card and it reads the words to you, in more than 60 languages. It can describe a room, detect colours, scan barcodes, help you find common objects and say the names of family and friends you've added when they're in view. With Ask Envision, you can then type or say a question about what it read or saw, such as "What's the total on this bill?" It works with VoiceOver on iPhone and TalkBack on Android.

What You Can Use It For

  • Reading the post. Scan a letter page by page. Spoken guidance helps you line up the edges, then the whole document is read out and saved.
  • Labels and packets. Instant Text reads short text as soon as the camera sees it, such as a tin, a sign or a medicine box.
  • Cards and notes. It can read handwriting, so birthday cards and shopping lists from family aren't a mystery.

Getting Started Step By Step

On A Phone Or Tablet

  1. Open the App Store (iPhone and iPad) or Google Play (Android).
  2. Search for Envision AI and check it's made by Envision Technologies. Copycat apps exist.
  3. Tap Get or Install, then open it.
  4. Allow the camera when it asks. If you use VoiceOver or TalkBack, the app is built to work with it.

Reading Something

  1. For a sign or label, choose Instant Text and hold the phone over it.
  2. For a letter or a page of a book, choose Scan Text and follow the spoken guidance until it takes the picture.
  3. Listen to the text. You can go back, pause or export it to edit or share.

Asking A Question

  1. After Scan Text or Describe Scene, open Ask Envision.
  2. Type or say your question, such as "Summarise this letter" or "What's the price of the burger?".
  3. Listen to the answer. If it matters, ask someone to double-check.

Things To Try Typing

Things you might ask Ask Envision:

  1. What's the use-by date on this packet?
  2. Summarise this letter in three short points.
  3. What colour is this shirt?
  4. Read me the opening times on this sign.
  5. Is there anything in this letter I need to reply to?

What It Costs

It's free. There's no paid version to buy. There are no in-app purchases in the Envision AI app.

If anyone asks you to pay to use it, or to "unlock" it, that's a scam.

Checked 29 October 2026 on the official Envision App page and the App Store listing. Envision also makes Ally, a separate talking assistant app. Ally is free for conversations of up to 10 minutes each, and Ally Pro costs extra:

PlanUSAUKWhat you get
Ally Pro, monthly$9.00 a month£9.00 a monthUnlimited conversation length.
Ally Pro, yearly$90.00 a year£90.00 a yearThe same, paid yearly.

Prices checked 29 October 2026 on the Apple App Store listing for Ally (USA and UK stores). Prices can change, so check there before you pay.

Ally Pro renews automatically until you cancel it in your App Store or Google Play subscriptions. You don't need Ally to use Envision AI.

Privacy And Safety

  • What it keeps. Envision's privacy policy says pictures and documents you take may be encrypted and stored in its cloud as a backup, and that it doesn't look at them or use them for anything else, except as the policy explains.
  • Before you scan a bank statement or a letter with your card or Social Security or National Insurance number, cover those details or ask yourself if the app needs to see them.
  • AI descriptions can be wrong. For medicines, doses and money, check with a pharmacist, your bank or someone you trust.
  • Never type passwords, PINs, bank or card numbers, your National Insurance number (UK) or Social Security number (USA).

Good Points And Watch-Outs

Good Points

  • Free, with no in-app purchases.
  • Built with blind and low-vision users, and works with VoiceOver and TalkBack.
  • Reads handwriting and more than 60 languages.

Watch-Outs

  • Describing scenes and answering questions is AI, so it can make mistakes.
  • Envision's privacy policy hasn't been updated since July 2021, so it doesn't spell out how the newer AI features handle your pictures.
  • Don't mix it up with Ally, the same company's other app, which has a paid Pro plan.

Similar Tools

  • Seeing AI: reads text and describes scenes aloud.
  • Be My Eyes: a volunteer or AI describes what your camera sees.
  • Lookout: Google's Android app that reads text aloud.
