Does ChatGPT Remember What You Tell It?

Yes, it can. ChatGPT saves your chats until you delete them and, if Memory is on, remembers details about you to use later. You're in control: you can view and delete memories in Settings, delete chats, use a Temporary Chat for private questions, and stop your chats being used for training.

Settings names last checked: 16 October 2026, on OpenAI's help centre. Options can differ by plan, country and device.

Quick Steps

  1. See memories: Settings, Personalization, Memory.
  2. Delete a chat: three dots, then Delete.
  3. Use a Temporary Chat for anything private.
  4. Stop training: Settings, Data controls.

What Does ChatGPT Keep?

There are three different things, and it helps to keep them apart:

  • Chat history: your past conversations, listed down the side. These are kept until you delete them.
  • Memory: details ChatGPT uses to personalise answers, such as your name or that you're vegetarian. It can come from things you asked it to remember and from your past chats.
  • Training: whether OpenAI can use your conversations to improve its AI. You can switch this off.

How Do I See What ChatGPT Remembers About Me?

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Personalization, then Memory.
  3. Here you can turn Memory off, turn off Reference saved memories or Reference chat history, and manage or delete what's saved.

You can also ask ChatGPT, "What do you remember about me?", or tell it, "Forget that I told you about my operation."

Turning Memory off doesn't delete your past chats. And deleting a chat doesn't automatically delete a saved memory that came from it. To remove something completely, delete the saved memory and the chat.

How Do I Delete A Chat?

  1. Find the chat in your list of past chats.
  2. Tap the three dots next to it (or press and hold it on a phone) and choose Delete.

OpenAI says a deleted chat disappears from your history straight away and is scheduled for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, unless it must keep it for security or legal reasons. Deleted chats can't be recovered. Archiving a chat only hides it. It doesn't delete it.

What Is A Temporary Chat?

For anything private, start a Temporary Chat (look for it at the top of a new chat). OpenAI says temporary chats:

  • don't appear in your chat history;
  • don't create or update memories;
  • aren't used to train its models;
  • may be kept for up to 30 days for safety reasons.

If you choose to save a temporary chat, it becomes a normal chat.

How Do I Stop My Chats Training The AI?

  1. Open Settings, then Data controls.
  2. Turn off Improve the model for everyone.

Your chats still appear in your history, but new ones won't be used to train OpenAI's models. This doesn't delete anything. More safety steps are in is ChatGPT safe?

What Should I Never Type?

  • Passwords, PINs and one-time codes.
  • Bank and card numbers.

USA

Your Social Security number or Medicare number.

UK

Your National Insurance number or NHS number.

Do Other AI Apps Remember Things Too?

Yes. Gemini calls its history Activity (see our Gemini guide), and Meta AI has its own memory settings (see our Meta AI guide). Treat any chatbot like a postcard, not a sealed letter.

Common Questions

If I delete a chat, has ChatGPT forgotten it?

Not necessarily. A memory saved from that chat is stored separately. Check Settings, Personalization, Memory and delete it there too.

Can other people see my ChatGPT chats?

Not unless you share a link to them or someone uses your account. Use a strong password and don't share your login.

How do I make ChatGPT forget something?

Ask it to forget, or open Settings, Personalization, Memory and delete the saved memory. Then delete the chat where you mentioned it.

Is it safe to tell ChatGPT about my health or family?

General questions are fine. Leave out names, ID numbers and anything you'd be upset to see leaked, or use a Temporary Chat.

Are temporary chats completely private?

They aren't saved to your history or used for training, but OpenAI may keep them for up to 30 days for safety reasons.
