Meta AI In WhatsApp And Facebook
Meta AI is an AI helper built into WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger and Instagram, shown by a colourful circle or a "Meta AI" chat. You don't have to use it. It can't read your private WhatsApp chats unless you share messages with it or mention it. Here's how to use it, limit it and stay safe.

What Is Meta AI?
Meta AI is a chatbot, a bit like ChatGPT or Gemini, built into Meta's apps. You can ask it questions, get ideas, have it write a message or make a picture. It's free. WhatsApp describes it as an optional service, and it isn't available in every country yet.
Meta AI is not a real person, even though it chats in a friendly, human way. WhatsApp's own help page says so.
What Can It See?
- Your personal WhatsApp chats are still end-to-end encrypted. WhatsApp says Meta AI can only read messages you send to it, messages that mention @Meta AI, or messages people choose to share with it.
- Anything you do send to Meta AI is received by Meta. WhatsApp's advice is to only send it what you'd be comfortable with it remembering.
- Meta AI can remember details you tell it to personalise answers. You can view and delete these memories.
How Do I Use Meta AI?
- In WhatsApp, tap the Meta AI icon (a coloured ring) or open the chat called Meta AI.
- Type a question, as you would to a friend. For example: "Give me three easy ideas for dinner with chicken and rice."
- In a group chat, type @Meta AI followed by your question. Everyone in the group will see the answer.
- Check anything important. Like every AI, it can be confidently wrong.
Can I Turn It Off?
No, not completely. As of today there's no setting to remove Meta AI from WhatsApp, Facebook or Messenger. The button stays in the app. But it only gets involved when you or someone in a group chooses to message it, so you can simply ignore it.
How Do I Limit Meta AI?
- Don't start a chat with it. If you never message Meta AI, it knows nothing from you.
- Delete its copy of a chat: in the chat with Meta AI, type /reset-ai and send it. To reset every chat you've had with it, type /reset-all-ais. Deleting the chat from your phone alone doesn't delete Meta's copy.
- Delete its memories: in the Meta AI chat, tap Meta AI at the top, then Memory, to see and delete what it has saved.
- In groups: a group admin can turn on the group's privacy settings to stop people using Meta AI features in that chat. WhatsApp calls this Advanced Chat Privacy, and menus can vary by phone and app version.
How Do I Stay Safe With Meta AI?
- Never share passwords, bank details, or health and money details you'd want kept private.
- Scammers sometimes pretend to be "WhatsApp" or "Meta AI support". The real Meta AI never asks for money or codes.
- If someone keeps chatting to you as a "friend" and later asks for money, it's not Meta AI, it's a scam. See Is this a real person or an AI?
Common Questions
Is Meta AI the same as ChatGPT?
No. They're made by different companies, but they do similar jobs. Meta AI lives inside Meta's apps. ChatGPT is a separate app and website. Our comparison covers ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.
Can Meta AI read my family WhatsApp chats?
WhatsApp says no, not unless someone mentions @Meta AI or shares a message with it. Personal messages stay end-to-end encrypted.
Is it good for my parents to use?
It can be a gentle first step because it's already in apps they know. Just make sure they know it's a computer, it can be wrong, and they shouldn't share private details.
