Is This A Real Person Or An AI?

Some "people" on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and dating sites are AI helpers like Meta AI, and some are fake profiles run by scammers using AI-made photos. Warning signs include a stranger contacting you out of the blue, photos that look too perfect, and any request for money. Simple checks, like a video call, help you tell.

What Kinds Of "Person" Might I Meet Online?

  • Built-in AI helpers. Meta AI appears in WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger and Instagram. It chats in a friendly, human way, but it's a computer program. Meta's own help pages remind people that it isn't a human.
  • AI characters and chatbots. Some apps and sites offer AI "companions" or characters with names and faces. They're designed to be pleasant to talk to.
  • Scam profiles. Real criminals behind fake profiles, often attractive or very kind, using AI-made or stolen photos. These are the ones that ask for money.

What Are The Warning Signs Of A Fake Profile?

  • They contacted you first, out of the blue, often with a compliment.
  • Photos look too perfect: smooth skin, odd hands, blurry backgrounds or jewellery that doesn't match.
  • The profile is new, has few friends or posts, or only photos of one person.
  • They want to move the chat to WhatsApp, Telegram or text quickly.
  • They can never video call, or the call "breaks up" every time.
  • Sooner or later there's a problem only money can fix: a fee, a medical bill, a plane ticket or an investment.

How Can I Check If Someone Is Real?

  1. Ask for a live video call at a time you choose. Scammers make excuses.
  2. Search the photo. Use Google Lens to see if the same face appears under other names.
  3. Ask something only a real local would know, or ask them to send a photo holding today's newspaper or a note with your name.
  4. Talk to someone you trust before you send money or personal details to anyone you've only met online.

Golden rule: never send money, gift cards or crypto to someone you've only met online, however real they seem.

How Can I Tell When I'm Talking To Meta AI?

In WhatsApp, Facebook and Messenger, Meta AI chats are labelled "Meta AI" and often show a coloured ring icon. It can answer in a warm, chatty way, and it can make pictures. That doesn't make it a person. If you're not sure, ask it directly: "Are you a real person?" It will tell you it's an AI. Read our guide to Meta AI in WhatsApp and Facebook.

Common Questions

Why would anyone reply to an AI woman or man?

These profiles are designed to be flattering, attentive and always available. That can feel lovely, especially if you're lonely. There's no shame in being taken in. Just don't send money or personal details.

Is chatting with Meta AI dangerous?

Not in itself. It's a helper, like ChatGPT. Just remember it's a computer, it can be wrong, and you shouldn't share private details like bank or health information with it.

How can I tell if a photo was made by AI?

Look closely at hands, ears, teeth, text and backgrounds, which AI often gets wrong. But good fakes can look perfect, so the safest test is a live video call.
