What's New This Week
Real World: How AI Affects Everyday Life
Our new Real World section has ten short stories on where AI is already at work, from helping doctors check breast scans to flagging odd bank payments and shaping your weather forecast. Every figure comes from a named source, and each story ends with what it means for you.
Do You Need To Pay For AI?
We rewrote our prices guide and checked each price on the official sites. ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini all have a free version, and for most beginners that's plenty. The main paid plans cost around US$20 a month in the USA and £19 to £20 a month in the UK.
New Tool Guide: Perplexity
Perplexity is an AI search engine. You ask a question in normal words, and it writes a short answer with numbered links to the websites it used, so you can see where the answer came from. You can try it without signing up.
Trending: New Voices In ChatGPT
On 15 October OpenAI started rolling out new, more natural voices in ChatGPT. If typing on a small screen is a struggle, voice mode lets you simply have a conversation. To pick a voice, open Settings, then Voice. ChatGPT only listens while voice mode is open.
Latest AI News And Trends
A few of the AI stories people are talking about this week.
AI Agents That Do Jobs For You
AI agents go a step beyond chatbots. Instead of only answering your question, they do the job for you, like sorting your files. On 19 October Microsoft said Copilot on newer Windows 11 PCs will soon be able to take actions on your computer, so you can ask for something in a sentence and let it handle the clicks.
Locked Chats In ChatGPT
ChatGPT is rolling out locked chats, which hide chosen conversations behind a 4-digit PIN, or Face ID or fingerprint on your phone, and it's coming to everyone, including the free plan. Write your PIN down somewhere safe, because if you forget it and reset it, your locked chats are deleted for good.
Does ChatGPT Remember What You Tell It?
Gemini Comes To Your Car
Since 20 October, Google's Gemini assistant is available on Android Auto, so you can talk to it naturally while driving. If you choose, it can look in your Gmail, Calendar and Maps to answer questions like "Is my flight on time?", and these personal features stay off until you switch them on.
Ads In ChatGPT Spread To More Countries
On 21 October OpenAI said ads in ChatGPT are now in 89 countries. They only appear on the free and low-cost Go plans and are labelled, so it's worth knowing that a suggested product may be a paid ad.
This Week's Tip: Make The Words Bigger
On a computer, hold Ctrl (or Cmd on a Mac) and press + to make any web page bigger. Press it again for bigger still. On exonexo, you can also use the A, A+ and A++ buttons at the top of every page, and there's a High Contrast option if the text is hard to read.
Safety Reminder: Agree A Family Safe Word
Scammers can copy a loved one's voice from a short clip online, then call asking for money fast. The US Federal Communications Commission suggests agreeing a safe word with your family ahead of time.
Choose something nobody could guess from social media, agree it face to face, and ask for it whenever a caller wants money. If they can't give it, hang up and call back on the number you already have.
