Grammarly
Free + paidDifficulty: Easy
Last checked: 16 October 2026
What Is It, In Plain Words?
Grammarly checks your spelling and grammar as you type, and underlines anything that looks wrong. It can also suggest ways to make a message clearer or friendlier.
It works in your web browser, in an app on your computer, and as a keyboard on your phone.
What You Can Use It For
- Emails. It spots typos before you press Send.
- Letters and complaints. It can suggest a calmer or more polite tone.
- Social media posts. Catch mistakes before everyone sees them.
Getting Started Step By Step
On A Computer
- Open your web browser and go to grammarly.com. Check the address carefully, because look-alike sites exist.
- Click Get Grammarly and sign up with your email or a Google, Apple or Microsoft account.
- Follow the steps to add it to your web browser or install it on your computer.
- Start typing in an email or form. Mistakes get a coloured underline. Click one to see the suggestion, then click to accept it.
On A Phone Or Tablet
- Open the App Store (iPhone and iPad) or Google Play (Android).
- Search for Grammarly and check it's made by Grammarly. Copycat apps exist.
- Tap Get or Install, then open it.
- Follow the steps to turn on the Grammarly keyboard in your phone's settings.

The free plan checks spelling and grammar. The paid plan is called Pro.
USA: Grammarly Pro is $30 a month, or $144 a year.
UK: Grammarly shows its UK price in pounds at checkout. Please check the official site.
US prices checked 15 October 2026 on the official Grammarly plans page (grammarly.com/plans).
Privacy And Safety
- What it sees. Grammarly reads the text you type where it's switched on so it can check it. Turn it off for sensitive things such as online banking or medical forms.
- Grammarly's settings let you choose whether your writing helps train its AI. Check them in your account under Privacy.
- Never type passwords, PINs, bank or card numbers, your National Insurance number (UK) or Social Security number (USA).
Good Points And Watch-Outs
Good Points
- Catches typos you'd otherwise miss.
- Works almost everywhere you type.
- On a computer, hold Ctrl (or Cmd on a Mac) and press + to make the words bigger. On a phone, it follows your text size setting.
Watch-Outs
- Its suggestions aren't always right, especially with British spelling. Set your language to British English if you're in the UK.
- The free plan keeps showing Pro suggestions you can't use.
