Step-by-step How-tos

Three short guides. Each one takes about 10 minutes. Go at your own pace.

1. Try your first AI chat

  1. On your computer or phone, go to chatgpt.com (or Gemini).
  2. Click in the box at the bottom that says "Ask anything".
  3. Type a simple question, for example: "Suggest three easy dinners using chicken and rice."
  4. Press Enter. Read the answer.
  5. Ask a follow-up: "Make it simpler" or "Which is quickest?"

Tip: never type passwords, bank details or your government ID number into a chatbot.

USA: never share your Social Security number with a chatbot.

UK: never share your National Insurance number with a chatbot.

2. Spot an AI scam

  1. Stop. Scammers want you to rush.
  2. Is someone asking for money, a code, or a password? That's a red flag.
  3. A "family member" calling from a new number in trouble? Hang up and call them back on the number you know. AI can copy voices.
  4. Agree a family "safe word" for emergencies.
  5. Still unsure? Use our scam checklist.

3. Set up a voice assistant

  1. Install the ChatGPT or Gemini app from your phone's app store.
  2. Open it and sign in (or create a free account).
  3. Tap the microphone or "voice" icon.
  4. Allow microphone access when your phone asks.
  5. Just talk: "What's a good stretch for a stiff back?"

Tip: for health questions, AI is a starting point. Always check with your doctor or pharmacist.
